Postcard from the Cafeteria
All Resources / Engaging Caregivers / Postcard from the Cafeteria
Sometimes the easiest way to connect with caregivers is through a flyer that the students can take home. Adapt this postcard to share updates, announce taste tests or contests, or to just keep lines of communication open with caregivers.
Instructions
Time Considerations: 60 minutes to create and print, time to distribute to teachers or others who will be giving them to students
Materials Needed: Paper, printer
Participants: You, teachers, kitchen team
Step One
Consider who you’d like to reach. Though this postcard is included as way to connect with caregivers here, it could easily be shared with community-based organizations to use in outreach or sent to teachers to provide updates on the program. Send them to your board to keep them in the loop and showcase the important work you are doing to meet the needs of children and families.
Step Two
Craft a short message. This could be an update, an invitation to an event, a overview of seasonal fruits and vegetables, or a reminder to sign up for free and reduced priced meals. Include a link to website or QR code particularly for the last idea so caregivers can fill out applications right away.
Step Three
Make a schedule. In these times, it’s challenging to imagine sticking to a rigid schedule. Just draft a high level idea -e.g., three postcards per year across different schools, focused on new dishes being introduced — and figure out logistics.
Step Four
Print out and distribute through your school networks. Or print them out on card stock and send them through the mail.
